From Erhu Champion to International Conductor

Huang Wencai’s artistic development was shaped by both Eastern and Western traditions. Under the mentorship of distinguished teachers such as Xia Feiyun and Professor Li Huade, he refined his musical foundation. With sponsorship from the National Arts Council, he pursued advanced erhu studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, later self-funding further studies in Western orchestral conducting under Professor Fu Renchang.
His dedication led him to earn both the LLCM and FLCM diplomas in Conducting from the London College of Music in 2007 and 2009 respectively. These credentials solidified his international standing and reflected his ability to bridge musical traditions across cultures.
As conductor of the Zui Hua Lin Galaxy Chinese Orchestra in Singapore and Resident Conductor and Music Director of the Southern Art Chinese Orchestra in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, Huang led ensembles to remarkable achievements. Under his baton, the Johor Bahru orchestra won Gold and Best Overall Gold Awards at the National Chinese Orchestra Competition in Kuala Lumpur.
His conducting style is described as expansive yet nuanced, capable of drawing precision and emotional unity from large ensembles. Beyond performance, he has served as judge for major competitions including the Zhejiang Lishui International Erhu Competition, Malaysia’s national music contests, and numerous school competitions. His influence extends far beyond the stage, shaping the next generation of musicians across Singapore and Malaysia.
